The question is being asked: are we watching the most unhittable pitcher who ever lived in San Diego?
It’s been claimed that the Padres’ closer, Mason Miller, is exactly that.
The stats are there to back it up, and two Hall of Fame closers concur that Miller just put together a dominant stretch unlike any other.
Hall of Famers Back Miller as ‘Most Unhittable’
Billy Wagner, a Hall of Famer himself, believes it’s more than just an opinion. “I think until somebody says, ‘I can prove you wrong,’ the stats say you’re right.”
Trevor Hoffman, for whom MLB’s best National League reliever trophy is named, agrees. “I don’t think the numbers are lying,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman compared Miller to Sidd Finch, a fictitious reliever who threw 110 mph. “That was fiction, but Mason’s real. And outside of Sidd Finch, I think Mason might be the most unhittable pitcher ever.”
Miller’s Incredible Stats
Examining Miller’s stats from August 6 until recently, the numbers are striking.
- Opposing hitters went 7-for-127 (.055), with 87 strikeouts
- He faced 141 hitters, and not one of them scored.
- He had 39 straight games with zero extra-base hits allowed.
- Miller also went 39 straight games without ever allowing more than one hit.
Hoffman reacted to these numbers by saying, “Ridiculous,” and laughing out loud.
It is clear that Mason Miller has been dominant.
