Ajay Mitchell, the 38th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, is playing a crucial role for the Oklahoma City Thunder as they aim to repeat as NBA Champions. In his second season, Mitchell has averaged 13.6 points on 49% shooting, along with 3.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He finished fifth in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
At 6-foot-3, Mitchell has provided the Thunder with an extra ball-handler and playmaker. He can also play off the ball. He’s been a massive offensive boost and has played stingy defense in the backcourt.
Stepping Up in the Playoffs
In the 2026 NBA Playoffs, Mitchell has stepped up due to All-Star Jalen Williams being out with his third hamstring injury. Game 1 against the Los Angeles Lakers highlighted Mitchell’s impact. He provided a steady presence as a handler, scoring 18 points and dishing out four assists, finishing with a plus-14 plus-minus as the Thunder won 108-90.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s Surprise
Even after Mitchell’s solid debut season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been surprised by Mitchell’s breakout.
“He’s been a bit of a surprise,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after the Thunder’s win over the Lakers. “Last year he was a good player, but coming in and being this confident and this skilled, this early in his career, for us it’s just been big. [Jalen Williams’ being hurt all year and him being a secondary handler for us, it’s honestly kept us afloat.
“When you’re as tough as he is, you figure it out no matter the situation, I’d bet on Ajay to figure it out 10 times out of 10.”
Draft Day Expectations
The 2024 NBA Draft was considered weaker than others, lacking a clear No. 1 talent and depth. The Thunder selected Nikola Topic with the No. 12 pick. They then traded up to grab Dillon Jones at No. 26. Mitchell was selected with the No. 38 pick.
Mitchell will continue to be a major part of the Thunder’s success. They will look to move past the Lakers and position themselves for a second-straight Western Conference Finals berth, with Mitchell playing a key role.
