Lens Need a Point Against Nantes to Secure Champions League Spot

Lens are on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League and require only one point from their match against Nantes to confirm their spot. A draw or win against Nantes would see them reach the competition after a long wait. Coach Pierre Sage has emphasised the importance of securing second place in Ligue 1.

Lens Aim to Seal Champions League Qualification

Bollaert is expected to be sold out for the 85th consecutive time for an official match as Lens take on Nantes. Red Tigers, the main group of Lens ultras, are planning to gather early to celebrate the club’s 120th anniversary and create a strong atmosphere for the match.

Mathematically, Lens need only a single point to guarantee a top-three finish and Champions League qualification. However, three points would eliminate the possibility of Lyon overtaking them for second place. Lens will conclude their league campaign away against Lyon.

Focus Remains on Nantes Despite Coupe de France Final

While thoughts may be drifting towards the Coupe de France final against Nice on 22 May, Sage and his staff are working to maintain focus on the league. Lens’ form has dipped recently, with the team dropping fifteen points in their last nine Ligue 1 matches, compared to only sixteen in their previous twenty-two.

The match against PSG, initially billed as a title decider, was postponed and no longer holds the same significance. Sage mentioned that his team is still aiming to look upwards in the league table. However, he acknowledges that the chances of catching PSG are slim, with PSG holding a six-point lead and a superior goal difference.

Nantes Fight for Survival

Lens’s match against Nantes could be seen as an ideal opportunity to secure Champions League qualification. However, Nantes’ need for points makes them dangerous opponents, since they will be mathematically relegated if they don’t win.

Lens will be aiming to quickly secure second place to fully focus on preparations for the Coupe de France final on 22 May.
