The Clacton constituency by-election has attracted a total of 34 confirmed candidates. This contest was triggered by the resignation of Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, on 7 July. Mr Farage resigned as MP following increased scrutiny over his finances and a parliamentary investigation. Despite his resignation, he is standing again in the by-election. Voters will go to the polls on 13 August.
Tendring District Council believes this to be the highest number of candidates to stand in a by-election in modern times. The previous record for candidates in a by-election is understood to have been 26. That record was set at the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in July 2008, which was triggered by Tory Sir David Davis in his own seat. The main Westminster parties ignored that contest.
Record Field for Clacton By-election
Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, will face 33 other candidates hoping to become Clacton’s new MP. The confirmed list for the Clacton by-election includes 20 independent candidates. A number of joke candidates are also on the list, with three from the Monster Raving Loony party among them. The list contains none from the main Westminster parties.
Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, and the Green Party all declined to take part in the contest for the Essex seat. This means Farage is the only candidate from a Westminster party in the by-election. The Reform UK leader denies the contest is a stunt, as Reform proposed the August by-election date. Farage’s by-election in Clacton was officially confirmed.
Farage and Key Challengers
Among the highest-profile opponents for Nigel Farage are joke candidate Count Binface and actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox. Count Binface is standing for the Count Binface Party. Laurence Fox is representing The Reclaim Party. Nigel Farage will contest the seat against these high-profile figures and a broad field of candidates.
The full list of candidates can be seen at Clacton Town Hall, as posted by acting returning officer Ian Davidson. The statement of Persons Nominated, which is lengthy, was posted outside Clacton Town Hall. This full list has also been published on the Tendring district council’s website.
