LA Galaxy and LAFC prepare for fiery El Tráfico restart

Friday night sees LA Galaxy host LAFC for the latest El Tráfico, a prime-time showdown scheduled for 10:25 pm ET. Supporters can watch the match on Apple TV, FOX, and FOX Deportes. This fixture is part of the MLS’s restart slate, as play resumes after a nearly two-month pause for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

High Stakes as League Resumes

LAFC head coach Marc Dos Santos stated, “If you have to choose a game to get started again, it’s this game.” He added that an LAFC-LA Galaxy game is not like any other, noting, “If both teams compete for first place or last place, it’s still a big game.” Dos Santos believes it is the biggest rivalry in MLS, and described it as “amazing to start right away with that.”

Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney echoed the sentiment, calling it “a hell of a way to get started.” Vanney also acknowledged that neither team would likely be their perfect version after such a long break. However, he maintained that the break “won’t change the emotion and the competitive spirit that’s going to be in this game for both the fans and the players and everybody else around it.”

A History of Close Rivalry

Since LAFC joined MLS in 2018 as an expansion team, little has historically separated these two clubs. The Galaxy, record six-time MLS Cup winners, hold a narrow advantage in the all-time series. Across 26 previous meetings, they have recorded 10 wins, 9 losses, and 7 draws.

The Galaxy have also outscored the Black & Gold by a single goal, holding a 57-56 advantage in that category. A notable aspect of this rivalry is that the matchup has never featured fewer than two goals in a single match. More fireworks and must-see moments are anticipated at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Star Power and Western Conference Battle

El Tráficos have a history of big-name stars delivering clutch moments. Carlos Vela is the game’s all-time leading scorer with 12 goals, while Zlatan Ibrahimović iconically scored the equaliser and game-winner off the bench on his debut. From the current squads, LAFC bring Son Heung-Min, Denis Bouanga, and Hugo Lloris to battle with Galaxy headliners Marco Reus and Joseph Paintsil.

Galaxy player Marco Reus commented on the stakes, stating, “It’s a lot on the table for both sides, so nobody wants to lose.” Reus, who has played two El Tráficos previously, expressed a desire for another win to start the second half of the season positively. LAFC’s Hugo Lloris added that a derby is about passion and identity, remarking, “It’s also related to the fans. LA is a big sports city, and obviously, it’s also about pride.”

At the season restart, the Galaxy are in ninth place in the Western Conference with 20 points, while LAFC sit in fifth place with 24 points. Both teams are currently above the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line, separated by just four points. A victory over a bitter rival could provide significant momentum to climb the standings in the second half of the year.
