The Atlanta Braves are making a statement in the National League East, extending their lead with a fifth consecutive victory. Their recent win came against the Phillies, completing a three-game series sweep.
Braves’ Strategy Pays Off Against Phillies
Braves manager Walt Weiss employed a strategic lineup, positioning Drake Baldwin and Matt Olson back-to-back. This was done with the expectation that at least one left-handed reliever would be brought in to challenge them. Weiss felt confident in Baldwin and Olson against left-handed pitching. He hoped the three-batter minimum would force the lefty reliever to face Austin Riley and possibly the right-handed version of switch-hitter Ozzie Albies.
The plan worked effectively as the Braves secured a 4-2 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday night. Ozzie Albies delivered a crucial RBI double off lefty reliever Tim Mayza during the go-ahead three-run fifth inning.
Dominating the National League East
The Braves’ success has propelled them to a significant lead in their division. The Braves (15-7) have won five straight. They now hold a five-game lead over both the Marlins and the Nationals in the National League East through just 22 games.
No other current division leader has more than a half-game lead.
Weiss’ Impact and Team Performance
The Braves are currently leading MLB in key statistical categories. They lead in runs scored (122) and ERA (2.66).
- Runs Scored: 1st in MLB (122)
- ERA: 1st in MLB (2.66)
- Division Lead: 5 games
Walt Weiss’s first three weeks as the team’s skipper have gone as well as anyone could have expected.
Turning the Tide in Philadelphia
Despite an early setback when Kyle Schwarber’s first-inning homer gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead, the Braves demonstrated their resilience. Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuña Jr. initiated a comeback in the fifth with consecutive singles against Phillies starter Andrew Painter.
Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson called on Tim Mayza to face Baldwin with two on and none out. Atlanta’s catcher walked, and Olson followed with a grounder to Bryson Stott. Riley followed with a dribbler to the left side that scored the go-ahead run, and Albies then delivered his double.
With their current form, the Braves will be looking to continue their dominance as the season progresses.
