Carlos Alcaraz was defeated by Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Miami Open on Sunday.
The match concluded with Korda winning in three sets.
Korda’s Victory Over the World Number One
Alcaraz, aged 22, has a 17-2 record this season. The world number one also suffered a loss to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semifinals the previous weekend.
Korda, 25, won with a final score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a match that lasted 2 hours, 19 minutes. Alcaraz acknowledged Korda’s strong performance, stating that Korda played an incredible game and capitalised on key moments.
Alcaraz said, “It was a tough match, obviously. I think [Korda] was incredible today. Played such a great game. A lot of tied moments that I just didn’t make the most of it, and I think he was better on [those] points and [those] moments.”
Korda’s Perspective
Korda is ranked No. 36. According to the ATP Tour, he is the lowest-ranked player to defeat Alcaraz since No. 55 David Goffin did so in the second round in Miami last year.
“A lot of tense moments, for sure,” Korda said. “But you know I think today, the ultimate thing was belief. Going back to just believing, committing into every shot, and luckily I got it done at the end.”
Other Players Advancing
Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul will join Korda in the fourth round. Fritz, the sixth seed, defeated Reilly Opelka 6-3, 6-4. Paul, seeded No. 22, eliminated Raphael Collignon with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory.
Jiri Lehecka, seeded No. 21, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, seeded No. 29, also secured wins.
Women’s Singles Results
On the women’s side, No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina progressed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 27 Marta Kostyuk. Jessica Pegula, seeded No. 5, recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 26 Leylah Fernandez.
Jasmine Paolini, seeded No. 7, Elina Svitolina, seeded No. 9, Ekaterina Alexandrova, seeded No. 11, and Iva Jovic, seeded No. 18, were eliminated. Paolini was defeated by No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko in three sets. Svitolina was defeated by Hailey Baptiste in straight sets.
Korda’s Next Match
Korda will next face the winner of the match between 14th-seeded Karen Khachanov and qualifier Martin Landaluce.
