Saddiq Bey Steps Up for Pelicans in Murray’s Absence

Saddiq Bey delivered an unexpected performance for the New Orleans Pelicans, stepping up as a playmaker in their 105-99 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The Pelicans were without Dejounte Murray, and interim head coach James Borrego opted for a non-traditional starting five.

Borrego’s lineup featured Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III in the backcourt, with Saddiq Bey and Zion Williamson at the forward spots, and Yves Missi in the middle. The Pelicans have moved to 10-5 since the All-Star break.

Bey’s Playmaking Performance

While Zion Williamson often steps up as the team’s lead playmaker in guardless lineups, it was Saddiq Bey who took on that role against the Clippers, recording six assists. Bey’s performance is particularly impressive considering he has never been viewed as a playmaker throughout his basketball career.

He was also the only starter on the Pelicans to record zero turnovers in the win.

All-Round Contribution

Despite his playmaking duties, Bey also contributed six rebounds and 20 points. He shot 54.5 percent from the field and 3-for-4 from three, while also going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Bey’s Value to the Pelicans

Bey has been a consistent and reliable player for New Orleans throughout the 2025-26 campaign, willingly stepping into whatever role the team needs. Some nights, he’s tasked with carrying the team with his scoring in the clutch; other nights, it’s about making stops defensively or fighting on the glass. Against the Clippers, he was tasked with playing the Dejounte Murray role.

Bey’s ability to adjust and buy into whatever role he’s needed to play has been his superpower all season. He is now viewed as someone who is a lock as part of the New Orleans Pelicans’ long-term future.
