Rotherham United have sacked manager Matt Hamshaw following a 5-0 defeat to Peterborough United. The loss leaves them six points adrift of League One safety with nine games remaining this season.
Hamshaw’s departure marks another managerial change for Rotherham, who are now seeking their fifth permanent manager since Paul Warne’s exit in 2022.
Hamshaw’s Tenure Ends After Poor Run
Matt Hamshaw, 44, initially took over as caretaker manager after Steve Evans was sacked in 2025. He was then appointed on a permanent basis in April last year.
Rotherham United have won just once in Matt Hamshaw’s final nine games in charge.
The club released a statement saying: “It is with a heavy heart that we end our affiliation with an individual who has strong historical connections and a clear passion for Rotherham United.” They added that action was necessary to give the team the best opportunity to preserve their divisional status.
Interim Management Team Appointed
Dale Tonge, Richard Wood and Andy Warrington will oversee first-team matters on an interim basis.
Tuesday’s defeat came in addition to Wigan avoiding defeat with a draw against outside play-off contenders Barnsley, while Blackpool won against bottom side Port Vale to boost their own survival credentials.
Search for a New Manager Begins
The club has stated that the process to appoint a replacement for Hamshaw will now begin. An update will be announced in due course.
