Fallout and Bethesda’s Future: Howard Discusses Big Plans

Good news could be coming in threes for fans of Starfield, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout. Xbox studio Bethesda recently provided a massive update on its plans for these big three properties, with studio director Todd Howard offering further context.

Howard stated that Bethesda loves making these worlds as much as players love playing in them. A note from Bethesda communicated a desire to share what is next for Bethesda Game Studios and what fans can expect in the years ahead.

Bethesda’s Long-Term Vision

Bethesda has built games for forty years, entertaining almost half a billion players. The studio describes these as worlds for players to explore, shape, and make their own, worlds to which they return together, driving Bethesda forward.

The company confirmed it is making investments to bring its core teams closer together. This strategy aims to build titles faster and provide support for longer, looking towards decades to come.

Howard on Challenges and Adaption

Todd Howard has stewarded Bethesda franchises since 1994, solidifying his place in gaming with the release of Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in 2000. He acknowledged that the game industry looks very different now, but Bethesda has consistently adapted to changing times.

Howard addressed recent difficulties, stating it is personally very difficult for him and his teams when long-standing colleagues are no longer present. He referred to previously difficult times in Bethesda’s history, including struggles in the 90s.

Prior to being acquired by Microsoft, the firm attempted to join the “service game” gold rush through various multiplayer-adjacent and mobile titles, with mixed success. Howard noted that Bethesda had to change its approach then, and again in 2016, regarding how it supports franchises across different studios.

He added: “I think we’re at another change moment for how we support each other, and what we do with these games and for our fans.”

The Fallout Series

Regarding the Fallout series, Obsidian made Fallout New Vegas. This entry is among the most beloved in the storied Fallout canon.

Bethesda Game Studios is continuing to make investments to support its franchises for decades to come, bringing its core teams closer to achieve this goal for its fans.
