Another Rangers season has reached an early end, marked by yet another failure to produce a full 90-minute performance.
After poor first-half showings against Falkirk and Motherwell, a strong start was crucial against Hearts. To their credit, they delivered.
Following a balanced opening, Rangers took control, moving the ball effectively and preventing Hearts from getting close. Their performance mirrored Motherwell’s earlier dominance against them.
Tactical Shift Halts Rangers’ Momentum
It appeared Danny Rohl’s side would regain a strong position in the title race, trailing their opponents and Celtic by just a point. However, this did not occur.
Derek McInnes’s half-time tactical adjustments countered Rangers’ midfield control. As soon as Hearts equalised early in the second half, momentum swung, effectively ending Rangers’ title hopes.
Fallout and Blame Apportionment at Ibrox
The aftermath has involved assigning blame for another disappointing season. Fingers have been pointed at Danny Rohl, James Tavernier, and Andreas Skov Olsen, among others.
Rohl deserves credit for turning Rangers’ fortunes around and making them title contenders. His initial tactics against Hearts were also spot on.
However, his and his players’ inability to adapt to Hearts’ changed shape is unacceptable. He was out-thought by Derek McInnes, just as he was by Jens Berthel Askou the previous week.
Questions are being raised about his future as Rangers manager. He and his players must respond by getting a result against Celtic on Sunday.
Tavernier has been unfairly criticised on this occasion. However, as captain, he must accept significant responsibility for the team’s failure to deliver in a crucial situation.
Skov Olsen has been a major disappointment since his high-profile arrival, making a permanent move seem unlikely.
Ultimately, Rangers have failed as a collective, prompting another period of soul-searching within Ibrox as the owners plan the way forward.
The remaining goal for this season is to overtake Celtic in second place, though this offers little consolation.
