NFL Free Agency 2026: Key Dates and Available Defensive Talent

NFL teams are gearing up for the 2026 free agency period, hoping to bolster their squads. Although the upcoming pool of free agents may not feature a lot of high-profile names, the depth of talent available could allow teams to significantly improve their rosters. Some positions have more depth than others.

Defensive Free Agents to Watch

Teams looking to rebuild their defences could find some valuable pieces in free agency. The Patriots significantly invested in defensive players last year, acquiring Milton Williams, Carlton Davis III, and Harold Landry III. The results speak for themselves; Williams and the defence propelled the Patriots through the AFC bracket and into the Super Bowl.

However, this year’s free agency class might be thin at certain defensive positions. Defensive tackle is particularly lacking in depth, and other spots aren’t much better. This could lead to teams overpaying for players who are merely borderline starters.

Edge Rusher Options: Hendrickson’s Situation

Trey Hendrickson is one of the notable edge rushers potentially available. In 2024, Hendrickson was a force, leading the league in pass-rushing metrics and racking up 26 sacks. However, 2025 was a different story. He played just 285 snaps before being sidelined by injuries and finished the season with four sacks and eight knockdowns in seven games.

Hendrickson, now 31, might receive the franchise tag at $27.3 million or have the opportunity to test free agency. While he should still command a sizable contract, it might not be as lucrative as it would have been a year ago due to his less impressive 2025 season.

Offensive Free Agents and Team Needs

Teams seeking offensive upgrades will also find options in free agency. Pickens’ 2025 season was him cashing in on all that talent that was obvious since his days at Georgia. The Cowboys have officially placed the franchise tag on Pickens.

Pierce has posted a ridiculous 21.8 yards per reception over the past two seasons. He’s been so effective stretching the field that he just joined Hall of Famer James Lofton with rare production, becoming the second player since 1982 to notch consecutive campaigns with six or more receiving touchdowns and an average of 20+ yards per reception.

With the free agency period approaching, teams will be evaluating their needs and targeting players who can make an impact. It remains to be seen which players will land where, and how these acquisitions will reshape the landscape of the league.
