Newcastle United are set to open talks with Freiburg in the coming days as they step up their pursuit of midfielder Johan Manzambi. The Switzerland international has risen to wider prominence during the World Cup, although he was already being tracked by leading clubs before the tournament.
As things stand, Newcastle are in the strongest position to close a deal for Manzambi. The player himself is reportedly keen on the opportunity to join the St James’ Park side, who are actively working to secure his signature.
The Athletic previously reported on Tuesday that Newcastle were continuing to work on a move for Manzambi. Securing the Switzerland international’s services is being prioritised by the club this transfer window.
Manzambi’s World Cup Performances and Club Record
Johan Manzambi, aged 20, has delivered impressive performances for Switzerland at the World Cup, contributing three goals and two assists. His impact was particularly notable when he scored a second-half double from the bench in a 19-minute cameo against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He found the net again after starting Switzerland’s final group game against co-hosts Canada. Switzerland are currently scheduled to face Colombia in the last-16 on Tuesday.
At club level, Manzambi has made 58 appearances for Freiburg, where he has scored nine times since making his debut in August 2024. His career began at Swiss club Servette before he made the move to Freiburg’s academy in 2023.
Newcastle’s Midfield Overhaul and Priority Target
Manzambi represents Newcastle’s priority target, a player they have admired for a long while. His direct, ball-carrying, and game-defining interventions for Freiburg over the past year or so, alongside his World Cup displays, have caught their eye.
The club has recently seen Sandro Tonali depart, joining Tottenham Hotspur in a deal that could be valued at up to £100million ($133m). There is also existing interest from Arsenal in Bruno Guimaraes, who partnered Tonali in central midfield last season, and whose World Cup journey with Brazil concluded on Sunday.
However, Newcastle have strongly insisted that Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale. The club is also engaged in efforts to complete a deal for 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax.
With Joe Willock likely to leave, having entered the final 12 months of his contract, Manzambi is considered the ideal No 8 to replace him. There is hope that Manzambi could even represent an upgrade on the former Arsenal youngster.
The acquisition of a player of Manzambi’s calibre would significantly temper the sales of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. His performances at the World Cup have drawn huge excitement, and he is seen as possessing massive room for growth.

Sebastian Stafford-Bloor’s analysis identifies Manzambi as one of the biggest talents in the Bundesliga, albeit still within his development phase. Stafford-Bloor notes that the inherent talent is present, and he possesses an almost perfect set of attributes for a modern midfielder.
These attributes include being skillful, physical, creative, durable, and capable of scoring goals. Such qualities explain his success at this World Cup and why clubs of Newcastle’s size are now paying attention to the player.
Manzambi looks ideally suited for the demands of the Premier League. Eddie Howe is understood to be keen for Newcastle to pull off this acquisition, particularly given that Manzambi has plenty of potential suitors.
Despite his clear potential, Stafford-Bloor poses a lingering question about his precise role, stating: “But what actually is he? That’s still a pertinent que”.
