White Sox Weigh Options for Coveted 2026 MLB Draft Pick

The Chicago White Sox are currently enjoying a season during which they are competing for the top spot in the American League Central. As MLB draft weekend unfolds, the focus for the Southsiders is very much on the future.

The White Sox hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, presenting them with several compelling options for their top selection. With Munetaka Murakami undergoing a rehab assignment to return soon, the club faces a significant decision regarding their draft strategy.

Strategic Choices for the White Sox

General Manager Chris Getz must decide whether to find a player who can try to contribute soon or instead shore up the farm system long term. The organisation’s farm system is currently described as middling, adding weight to the long-term development pathway.

Getz has, unsurprisingly, been playing his options close to the vest. He has said almost nothing of substance regarding whom Chicago is targeting with the prestigious pick, instead speaking about the value of having options available.

The General Manager also highlighted the ability to find a high-impact player with the No. 1 selection. Speaking in December 2025 after the White Sox secured the top overall pick, Getz reflected on past draft approaches.

“There’s been plenty drafts through the years where, OK, are we gonna go this pathway?” Getz stated. He continued, “You focused on perhaps more the spending throughout the draft just because you feel like the talent isn’t so extreme at the top.”

However, Getz indicated a different scenario for 2026. “But in this case, it looks like we got a chance to get a player that is big-time impactful. So, super excited,” he concluded, indicating the perceived strength at the top of this draft class.

Leading Contenders for the Top Spot

Three players are consistently appearing on the radar as potential No. 1 overall picks for the White Sox. These prospects offer differing profiles and skill sets for Chicago to consider.

UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky has long been considered the consensus No. 1 player in this class. His consistent performance has kept him at the forefront of draft discussions.

Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey has rocketed up leaderboards, anchoring a remarkably potent Yellow Jacket lineup. His rise adds another strong collegiate option for the White Sox.

Texas high school shortstop Grady Emerson has also emerged as a possible under-slot option at 1-1. His presence provides a prep alternative for the top selection.

While Chicago is assumed to select one of these top three, there is always the possibility of a surprise. The White Sox could shock the world by taking UC Santa Barbara’s Jackson Flora to bolster their pitching ranks, or an out-of-left-field prospect like prep shortstop Jacob Lombard.

The Case for Roch Cholowsky

Coming into the 2026 college baseball season, Roch Cholowsky seemed destined to be a slam dunk No. 1 overall pick. However, as the college baseball year drove on, some questions arose about Cholowsky’s ceiling.

He does not possess the elite physical tools seen in players like Bobby Witt Jr. Furthermore, while his bat has solid pop, it is not expected to deliver a 30-plus home run boon akin to Marcus Semien’s in his prime.

Despite these observations, Cholowsky might have the benefit of time on his side regarding his development. As a senior with the Bruins, he slashed .320/.452/.636 with 21 home runs, demonstrating strong collegiate production.

The White Sox also have existing farm system considerations that could favour Cholowsky. No. 4 prospect Billy Carlson is still years off from debuting, and No. 1 Caleb Bonemer is shaping up to be more of a third baseman than a shortstop.

The White Sox have faced a shortstop problem since the precipitous falloff of Tim Anderson. Though Colson Montgomery has made great gains in addressing that issue, the acquisition of more infielders for the farm system is often seen as beneficial.

The White Sox general manager Chris Getz has expressed his excitement about the opportunity to acquire a big-time impactful player. The decision ahead for the club will shape their future, with several compelling options available at the top of the 2026 MLB Draft.
