Michail Antonio Weighs Up Retirement After Qatar Move

Michail Antonio is considering retirement after his stint in Qatar with Al Sailiya. The 36-year-old is weighing up his options as his deal with the club has expired.

Offers on the Table

Antonio has been in discussions with several clubs about his future. He stated, “I’ve been talking to a few clubs. We’re going to see what they offer but in the back of my mind, I’m thinking I could possibly retire.”

A decision is expected by the end of June. “I’m not too sure yet, we’re just going to weigh up everything that comes our way and make a decision probably by the middle of June, or the end of June.”

Life After Football

Antonio is also preparing for life after his playing career. He has been building a business portfolio and is involved in media work. “I’ve got my pundit and presenting side of things as well that I can do,” he said.

He acknowledges the advice from ex-pros to continue playing if he is fit and well. “Ex-pros have also told me that if you’re fit and you’re well, try to play as much as possible, because you’re a long time retired. So that’s another thing that’s playing on my mind. There are a few things where I’ve just got to make a decision.”

Near Brentford and Leicester Moves

Last summer, Antonio was out of contract. He nearly signed for Brentford and Leicester, but muscle injuries prevented those deals from materialising. He then moved to Qatar in March, joining Al Sailiya on a deal until the end of the season and making a handful of appearances.

Reflecting on a Car Accident

A year ago, Antonio returned to playing after a car accident. He suffered a badly broken leg after his Ferrari crashed into a tree in December 2024, an accident he admits could have killed him.

After 10 years at West Ham, he never played for them again. He returned to action last June for Jamaica at the Gold Cup.

Antonio and his agent are evaluating the best path forward, considering both playing opportunities and business ventures. “Me and my agent have partnered up with a few companies and we’re just weighing it up, what’s the best move for me.”

Antonio’s memoir, Humans Not Robots, will be released on June 4, published by HarperCollins.
