Mets Endure Longest Losing Streak in 22 Years Amid Struggles

The New York Mets are mired in a nine-game losing streak, their longest since 2004. This comes after a 12-4 loss to the Cubs. The team’s struggles have led to frustration within the clubhouse, with manager Carlos Mendoza calling for better execution.

Offensive Woes and Defensive Lapses

Several factors contribute to the Mets’ current predicament. These include Juan Soto’s injury and widespread offensive slumps. Kodai Senga’s consecutive starts of six or more earned runs have also exacerbated the situation.

During the losing streak, the Mets’ offense has struggled, posting a .175/.213/.257 slash line before a 14-hit performance in the opener. Despite scoring three runs in the second inning, matching their total from the previous 39 innings, they only managed one additional run. The team also allowed a season-high 12 runs.

Defensive miscues have further compounded the Mets’ problems. Brett Baty misplayed two balls in the fourth inning, with one error leading to a run. Mark Vientos missed a swipe tag in the seventh after an errant throw.

Stearns Addresses Team’s Performance

President of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledged the team’s offensive struggles. He stated that the team is playing hard and preparing, but recognised the feeling of stagnation due to the lack of hitting. Stearns held a rare pregame press conference.

Mendoza also commented on the team’s inconsistent performance. He noted the fluctuations in the team’s play, with offensive struggles coinciding with good starting pitching, and vice versa. Mendoza stressed the need for a consistent game where all aspects of the team are clicking.

Veteran Leaders Look to Turn the Tide

Despite the concerning performance, it is still early in the season. The club has veteran leaders who have experienced similar stretches. There is an expectation that players like Francisco Lindor (.610 OPS), Bo Bichette (.565), Jorge Polanco (.532) and Marcus Semien (.565) will improve their performance at the plate.

The Mets are currently 7-13. They are trying to end their losing streak.
