Marc Albrighton has reflected on Leicester City’s stunning Premier League title success. Albrighton recalled the hours that immediately followed confirmation of Leicester’s title win on 2 May 2016.
Police Escort to Vardy’s Party
Albrighton recounted how he had to get a police escort to Jamie Vardy’s house. There were too many fans outside Vardy’s gate, so his parents dropped him at the police station instead. Ben Chilwell was also in the custody room, having been told to do the same thing.
Both players were then driven to Vardy’s house in the back of a police car. Albrighton recalled fans banging on the police car window and throwing scarves on the car. He said that it was how he imagined celebrities feel.
The jubilant and chaotic scenes in Leicester that night were sparked when Tottenham failed to beat Chelsea in a title-deciding result. It was an outpouring of delighted disbelief as the Foxes pulled off what remains one of the most famous underdog stories.
The reason it is known as the 5,000-1 title win is that the likelihood of the team that narrowly escaped relegation a year earlier was so far fetched that bookmakers wrote it off as just about impossible.
Anniversary Marked Amidst Relegation Struggles
Albrighton said that he doesn’t think a day has gone by where the title win hasn’t been mentioned. He feels that shows the size of the achievement.
Despite the anniversary, there is a sense of unease because the club’s struggles of recent years has culminated in back-to-back relegations. It means Leicester will play in the third tier of English football for just the second time in their history next season.
Wes Morgan, who was captain of the Premier League title-winning side, has previously said he is sad and hurt to see where Leicester are now. Morgan also insists the club’s greatest achievement definitely needs to be celebrated, talked about and enjoyed.
- Leicester City won the Premier League with odds of 5,000-1.
- Marc Albrighton and Ben Chilwell needed a police escort to get to Jamie Vardy’s party.
- Leicester City have suffered back-to-back relegations.
Morgan said that he doesn’t think it will taint what the team did by any means, regardless of what’s happened. He added that the club, the fans and everyone needs to celebrate, talk about and enjoy the title win.
