Knicks Face Motivated Pelicans Team Led by Zion Williamson

The New York Knicks faced a challenge against a motivated New Orleans Pelicans team, featuring a resurgent Zion Williamson.

Williamson, labelled a “freak of nature” by Josh Hart, has been a significant presence for the Pelicans, appearing in 45 of the past 46 games. Hart, who previously played with Williamson in New Orleans, acknowledged his talent, stating he’s one of the league’s top players when focused.

Williamson’s Impact on the Pelicans

After considerable hype and national broadcasts early in his career, Williamson’s presence has been somewhat subdued this season. He was also on a minutes restriction earlier in the season. His per game averages include 21.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 29.7 minutes, with a 59.8 percent shooting accuracy.

Hart emphasised the difficulty in defending Williamson, noting his explosive athleticism and touch around the rim. He advised a disciplined approach, cautioning against reaching in and focusing on making Williamson finish tough shots.

Pelicans’ Recent Form and Motivation

Despite a disappointing season with a 25-47 record, the Pelicans have shown recent improvement, securing 12 wins in their last 19 games. Unlike some of the Knicks’ recent opponents, the Pelicans have no incentive to lose. They traded their 2026 first-round pick to the Hawks.

The Knicks faced a motivated team and Williamson, who has only played at MSG twice before as a professional, winning once in 2024 and losing in 2021.

Hart highlighted Williamson’s impressive first burst and second jump, also praising his touch around the rim. He noted Williamson’s ability to quickly secure rebounds, sometimes before defenders can react.

Shamet’s Injury

Landry Shamet was ruled out for a second consecutive game. Shamet has a tibial plateau contusion after banging his knee in Friday’s victory over the Nets. A league source indicated the injury is not considered major, and the guard is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period.

Shamet watched Sunday’s win over the Wizards in street clothes, when his injury designation was right knee soreness.
