Jordan Spieth Aims for Career Grand Slam at PGA Championship

Jordan Spieth is aiming to join Rory McIlroy in the Grand Slam club with a victory at this week’s PGA Championship.

It marks his 10th attempt at winning the elusive major. However, Spieth enters the competition outside the world’s top 50 and without a worldwide top-10 finish since last June.

Spieth’s Grand Slam Ambitions

Former Ryder Cup player Chris Wood expressed his support for Spieth’s Grand Slam pursuit on the Sky Sports Golf podcast.

Wood highlighted the entertaining nature of Spieth’s game and the valuable insights he provides to viewers. He said, “He takes you on a roller-coaster ride with his golf, but it’s entertaining, and I think he gives great insights to people watching.”

Wood added, “After that form he showed over those few years, where he was contending in almost every major he played in, he almost deserves the career Grand Slam.”

Wood acknowledged that the PGA Championship setup may not be ideally suited to Spieth’s style of play. “The PGA set-up probably isn’t quite suited to his game, but who knows if he gets the putter going. He might have a chance, but it’s a long shot!”

Americans Dominate the PGA Championship

The PGA Championship has seen a strong run of American winners in recent years. The last 10 winners of the Wanamaker Trophy have all been from the United States.

Scottie Scheffler returns as defending champion after his victory last year. Scheffler’s form since the beginning of 2022 is 30 shots better than anyone else in majors.

Other American players in contention include Bryson DeChambeau, who has finished as runner-up at the last two PGA Championships, and Xander Schauffele. Jimmy Walker (2016), Justin Thomas (2017, 2022), Brooks Koepka (2018, 2019, 2023) and Phil Mickelson (2021) have also contributed to the 10-year streak of American success.

Scheffler’s Chances at Aronimink

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler is the pre-tournament favourite to defend his title.

He is aiming for a fifth major victory in as many seasons. Scheffler followed a runner-up finish at The Masters with second place in his next two PGA Tour appearances.

Scheffler has the chance to complete the career Grand Slam next month at the US Open.

Cameron Young has already won The Players and the Cadillac Championship this season, while Patrick Cantlay is also competing.
