Saturday at the 2026 Italian Open promises a busy schedule after rain disrupted the first few rounds. Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff are among the key players set to compete.
Sinner’s Pursuit of History
Jannik Sinner is aiming to become only the second player to win all nine Masters tournaments. He seeks to continue his run this weekend, having already secured five consecutive Masters titles. He faces Sebastian Ofner, who defeated Alex Michelsen in the first round. Ofner, who is 29 years old, is facing Sinner for the first time. Despite some early-season wins on the Challenger Tour, Ofner’s form has been less than impressive.
Sinner’s match is considered a mismatch.
Medvedev Seeks Form Against Macháč
Tomáš Macháč, after an emphatic win over Stefanos Tsitsipas, is set to face Daniil Medvedev in the second round. Macháč has lost both of his previous encounters with Medvedev. Their last match was at the 2024 French Open.
Since reaching the final in Indian Wells, Medvedev has had disappointing results in Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid. Macháč’s results have been mixed since winning in Adelaide earlier this year. Medvedev is expected to find some form and secure a much-needed win.
Sabalenka vs. Cîrstea
Sorana Cîrstea has a 1-2 record against Aryna Sabalenka. They have only met once since the start of 2024, with Sabalenka winning in straight sets in Brisbane earlier this year. A loss to Hailey Baptiste in Madrid ended Sabalenka’s streak of five consecutive finals. This defeat highlighted her vulnerability on clay compared to hard courts.
Cîrstea typically performs well on clay. Despite a win over Tatjana Maria, it may not be enough to challenge Sabalenka.
Gauff Faces Sierra
Both Coco Gauff and Solana Sierra had a relatively straightforward path to this stage. Solana Sierra is most comfortable on clay, with a winning percentage above 71%. The Argentine reached her first-ever WTA 1000 fourth round in Madrid.
Coco Gauff reached the final in Miami but has struggled to adapt to clay courts. Early exits in Stuttgart and Madrid have increased the pressure on her to perform well in Rome as preparation for the French Open. Sierra’s performance in Madrid and her strong start in this tournament suggest she could challenge Gauff.
Saturday promises a day filled with high-stakes matches at the Italian Open.
