Amanda Knox: ITV Drama Revisits Years-Long Ordeal

Amanda Knox was thrown behind bars, having been sentenced to more than two decades in prison before her conviction was ultimately overturned. The Seattle-born author experienced a years-long ordeal, which a new ITV drama, ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’, is now revisiting.

Ms Knox was just a student when she moved into a four-bedroom apartment in Perugia, Italy. She shared the flat with three other women, including British exchange student Meredith Kercher and two trainee lawyers.

Upon settling into life in the university city, Knox found part-time work at a local bar named Le Chic. During her time in Italy, she met fellow student Giacomo Silenzi, who regularly visited the apartment, and later became acquainted with Rudy Guede before beginning a relationship with computer science student Raffaele Sollecito.

The Tragic Discovery in Perugia

Knox’s time in Italy took a devastating turn on 1 November, 2007. That evening, Meredith Kercher, then 21 years old, failed to return home after spending time with friends.

The following morning, Ms Knox returned to the apartment with Raffaele Sollecito. She became concerned when she noticed the front door was open, blood spots were visible inside the bathroom, and Kercher’s bedroom door was locked.

Police were subsequently called and forced entry into the room. There, they tragically discovered Meredith’s body, revealing she had been sexually assaulted and fatally stabbed. This horrific discovery sent shockwaves through Italy and prompted an intense murder investigation that quickly attracted worldwide attention.

The Investigation and Initial Convictions

Within days of the discovery, investigators turned their attention to Ms Knox and Mr Sollecito. Police claimed that the couple had given inconsistent statements during lengthy overnight interviews.

Knox herself states that she was interrogated without legal counsel for 53 hours over several days. During her questioning, while exhausted, Knox wrongly implicated her employer at Le Chic, Patrick Lumumba.

Lumumba was later cleared when investigations confirmed he had a solid alibi. Despite disputed forensic evidence linking Knox to the murder, prosecutors suggested that she and Sollecito had attacked Meredith together during a sex game that had turned violent.

Detectives, after finding bloody fingerprints, suggested that Rudy Guede was also involved in the events of that night. In 2009, both Knox and Sollecito were convicted of Meredith’s murder.

Ms Knox received a 26-year prison sentence, while Mr Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years. Guede, who was tried during a fast-track procedure, was convicted separately and sentenced to 30 years in prison, which was later reduced to 16 years on appeal.

Global Scrutiny and Overturned Judgements

The case quickly became one of the most closely followed criminal trials in the world. Notably, supporters and experts in the United States questioned the handling of the investigation.

These critics argued over the key forensic evidence presented and criticised the interrogation process employed by authorities. Throughout the proceedings, Knox has always maintained her innocence.

In 2011, an appeal court ultimately overturned both her conviction and Sollecito’s conviction. This happened after independent experts challenged the reliability of the evidence that had been used to convict them. Following the overturning of her conviction, Knox returned to the United States.

The new ITV drama aims to shed light on the complex details and the significant period of Ms Knox’s life as her years-long ordeal is revisited for viewers.
