Ime Udoka: Houston Rockets Coach Under Pressure

Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka is facing scrutiny, with his future potentially hinging on the team’s performance in the upcoming playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons suggested that Udoka’s job security isn’t assured. Simmons stated he has not been impressed by the coaching of this team this year, and that the chemistry doesn’t seem great.

Game 1 of the Lakers-Rockets series is on Saturday.

Udoka’s Coaching Under Scrutiny

Simmons said he finds the Rockets’ offence bizarre. He added that he would be very unsurprised if Udoka was not their coach next year.

Udoka is in his third year as head coach.

Kevin Durant’s Impact and Social Media Activity

The season reportedly took a turn after All-Star Weekend, when stories linked Kevin Durant to a burner account on X that was critical of teammates Jabari Smith and Alperen Sengun and created several message groups that defended Durant.

Durant has a history with social media controversies. In 2017, Durant admitted to using burner accounts while he was on the Oklahoma City Thunder to defend himself online.

Durant did not deny the most recent accusations; he just called it “Twitter nonsense” and refused to answer questions about it. He was also fined $50,000 by the NBA in 2021 for “homophobic and misogynistic language” in an Instagram DM exchange.

The Rockets’ record before and after the All-Star break highlights a shift in performance: the team was 33-20 before and 19-10 after.

Udoka’s History of Controversy

Udoka’s past also includes a scandal during his time with the Boston Celtics. After leading the Celtics to the NBA Finals in the 2021-22 season, Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season for having an “inappropriate relationship” with a female staff member.

Joe Mazzula permanently replaced Udoka.

Looking Ahead

Udoka’s position appears to be under evaluation as the Rockets face a crucial playoff series against the Lakers.
