French Open: Pegula Favoured as Kalinskaya Awaits

The WTA French Open action continues on Tuesday, entering its third day of first-round competition. The field of 128 players will be sliced down to 64, with many matches and stories to follow.

Waltert v Siniakova: A Value Bet?

Simona Waltert faces Katerina Siniakova in an interesting first-round match. This will be the first meeting between the two players. Siniakova is .500 entering the WTA French Open and also .500 on clay and on hardcourt. Waltert is 11-6 on clay this year, but just 6-9 on hardcourt. Neither player has won a tournament this year, but Waltert made the quarterfinals in Oeiras, while Siniakova hasn’t been past the round of 16 in any tournament this year.

Waltert is definitely playing better on clay and has been consistent leading into the Major.

Most books have Siniakova as a 1.45-2.8 favourite. However, Waltert has proven she should be taken seriously on clay. Taking the risk on Waltert straight up at 2.97 on Pinnacle could provide a solid return. It may even be up over 3 by the time the match starts.

Betting on Waltert winning is a value bet.

Pegula Heavily Favoured

Kimberly Birrell is one of many women in the back half of the top-100 who have drawn a top-20 player in the first round. Birrell has drawn Jessica Pegula. Pegula’s 2022 run to the quarterfinals here in Roland-Garros is the furthest she’s ever gone. It was also the only time she’s made the quarterfinals or beyond. Birrell is 0-3 on clay so far this year, and this is only her fifth time playing at Roland-Garros overall.

If Birrell manages to win this match, and someone bet on her doing so, they’re going to leave that match with an absurd return, as one book has Pegula as a 25.7-1 favourite. On average, most books are closer to 15-1 in favour of Pegula. A good return on a correct score bet isn’t even possible.

Pegula +7 games at 1.75 is the suggested bet. Pegula is going to win, but she’s going to have to do much better than her 2025 performance in Cincinnati to make any kind of money.

Other Matches to Watch

Victoria Mboko faces Nikola Bartunkova. The competition will see which top seeds are in danger and which floaters in the draw will begin to pick up momentum.

There are so many certainties in the first round of the French Open, but there are also matches where you can take a cheap flier and potentially come away with a damn solid return.
