El Paso Locomotive FC have announced the signing of forward Cristo Fernández. The club confirmed the signing is pending league and federation approval. Fernández is widely recognised for playing Dani Rojas in the television series Ted Lasso.
Fernández Joins After Trial Period
Fernández joins the USL Championship side after a two-month trial period. During his trial, he trained with the squad regularly. He also played in a preseason match against New Mexico United.
Coach Praises On-Field and Off-Field Qualities
Head Coach Junior Gonzalez voiced his optimism about the new addition. He highlighted Fernández’s potential on the pitch, as well as his presence off the pitch. Gonzalez stated that Cristo is a great addition to their roster, bringing another attacking threat to the forward line.
Gonzalez added that Fernández’s passion for the game and leadership qualities will help the club continue growing its positive culture.
A Return to Football
Fernández’s path to professional football has been unconventional. He started in the youth ranks of Tecos FC in Mexico. However, he had to stop playing at 15 due to injury, later becoming an actor and achieving international fame through Ted Lasso, despite his success in entertainment, Fernández maintained a connection to the game.
Fernández said that football has always been a huge part of his life and identity. He added that no matter where life has taken him, the dream of competing professionally never truly left his heart. Fernández expressed his gratitude to El Paso Locomotive FC for the opportunity to compete.
‘Crazy Dreams’ Become Reality
Fernández described his return to professional soccer as a testament to perseverance and belief. He said that this journey back to professional football is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be. He added, “Because as we say in Mexico: hay que seguirle echando ganas Maybe I’m just a crazy man with crazy dreams so being here with the ‘Locos’ actually makes perfect sense. ¡Vamos Locos!”
Fernández’s signing gives El Paso more options in attack as they build their 2026 roster.
