Conor Sammon, a former loanee, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.
A Career Spanning Two Decades
Sammon’s career began with UCD before he moved to Derry City, Kilmarnock, Wigan Athletic, and Derby County. He then joined Ipswich Town on loan.
The Dubliner also had spells with Rotherham (loan), Sheffield United (loan), Hearts, Kilmarnock (loan), Partick Thistle (loan), Motherwell (loan), Falkirk and Alloa Athletic.
Reflecting on his career, Sammon wrote on LinkedIn: “From kicking a ball as a young boy, it was always my dream to play professionally one day. I feel incredibly lucky to have fulfilled that dream and spent the last 20 years playing in Ireland, England and Scotland.”
He added, “I’m also incredibly proud to have represented my country on nine occasions; a privilege and honour I’ll never forget. Over those years, I’ve been fortunate to represent some fantastic clubs and meet so many amazing people along the way.”
Ipswich Town Loan Spell
Sammon played for the Blues in the first half of the 2014/15 play-off season. During that time, he made eight starts and 11 substitute appearances, scoring one goal.
Gratitude and Tributes
Sammon expressed his gratitude to his wife, family, teammates, managers, coaches, staff, supporters, and clubs. He thanked his wife Caroline for her sacrifices and support throughout his career. He also thanked his parents, brothers, and sisters for their support.
“Football has given me so much more than a career. It has taught me discipline, resilience and the importance of teamwork. It gave me friendships and memories that will stay with me forever and perspective both on and off the pitch.”
