Chelsea Appoint Xabi Alonso: Poyet Backs Decision Over Mourinho

Chelsea’s decision to appoint Xabi Alonso has received the backing of former midfielder Gus Poyet, who believes it was the right call to overlook a potential return for Jose Mourinho. Poyet highlighted Alonso’s tactical approach and the advantage of no European football as key factors. Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge following a spell at Real Madrid, where he had 24 wins, four draws, and six defeats in 34 matches. Prior to that, he won a German title, cup, and super cup with Bayer Leverkusen, claiming 89 victories in 140 games.

Poyet Praises Alonso’s Understanding of the Game

Poyet expressed his enthusiasm for Alonso taking over at Chelsea. “I’m delighted with the agreement. I’m really, really happy that Xabi is coming there,” Poyet stated. He added, “As a player, he understood the game in an incredible manner. Sometimes you kind of know which players can be coaches.”

European Absence a Benefit for New Manager

Chelsea’s failure to qualify for European football, finishing 10th this season, is viewed by Poyet as a benefit for Alonso. “For the manager, it’s better,” the Uruguayan explained. “For Xabi Alonso, it’s better. Because he gets more time to work during the week. When you start playing every week, you don’t have time to embed your system properly. Exactly what he did at Leverkusen. The team needs time. And the time that not playing European football gives you between weekends is invaluable.”

Moving On From Mourinho

The decision to hire Alonso has effectively ended speculation about Jose Mourinho’s return, who is now nearing a return to Real Madrid next season. Mourinho’s previous spells with Chelsea saw him secure three Premier League titles, three League Cups, one FA Cup, and one Community Shield. Poyet believes the current squad’s characteristics influenced the decision to move forward with Alonso. “I love Jose and I thought he was a Chelsea legend forever. But it’s more about the players, not about him,” Poyet noted. “I think with Xabi Alonso, it’s an opportunity to build something different with the characteristics of the players.”

Alonso now faces the challenge of implementing his tactical blueprint in the Premier League. Chelsea have backed their new manager to create a clear tactical identity without the distractions of European competition. With Mourinho potentially heading back to Spain, attention will be focused on Alonso to see if he can revitalise the club and improve their league position this season.
