Real Madrid are riding high heading into the international break. Their recent 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid marked their first league success against their city rivals since September 2022.
The win represents their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions. Combined with their 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City in the Champions League last 16, the atmosphere around Alvaro Arbeloa’s side is positive.
Arbeloa’s Impact on Team Performance
Real Madrid had previously struggled against several opponents – Celta Vigo, Elche, Manchester City and Atletico – earlier in the season under Xabi Alonso. They failed to beat any of them.
Arbeloa faced rumours of replacement following his promotion as reserve team manager in January. Now, he enjoys a far stronger position after triumphs against teams led by Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, and Diego Simeone.
According to reports, the dressing room atmosphere has improved under Arbeloa. The connection between Madrid’s big stars and the manager and his coaching staff has been key.
Vinicius Jr. and Valverde’s Improved Stats
The performances of Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde exemplify this improvement. Vinicius Jr. has scored two goals in their recent league victory. He has contributed 11 goals and four assists in 16 matches under Arbeloa, compared to six goals and 10 assists in 27 games with Alonso.
Valverde has played 17 matches for Arbeloa, scoring seven goals and contributing five assists. Under Alonso, he scored once and made seven assists in 25 games.
Valverde’s Red Card and Suspension
Valverde was one of Madrid’s best players against Atletico, scoring the goal to put the home side 2-1 up. However, he was shown a straight red card for a 77th-minute hack on Alex Baena.
Valverde has history with Baena. In April 2023, Valverde punched Baena in a post-match confrontation.
Referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero’s match report stated Valverde was sent off for “kicking an opponent, without being within playing distance, using excessive force”. League regulations dictate that this offence comes with a minimum two-match suspension.
The Spanish football association’s disciplinary committee ordinarily meets on Tuesday or Wednesday. Madrid will be anticipating Valverde’s suspension.
Real Madrid stay within four points of leaders Barcelona following Sunday’s 3-2 victory.
