Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson is facing uncertainty, despite reports of agreed personal terms. According to Fabrizio Romano, internal discussions at Man Utd and structural changes at Atalanta are causing delays.
Internal Discussions at Man Utd
Man Utd are yet to decide whether to proceed with the Ederson deal, as they are considering multiple midfield candidates. The club is internally discussing whether to close the deal for Ederson or pursue other options. Man Utd have been in conversation with Atalanta and Ederson is waiting for Man Utd’s final decision.
Romano stated that Man Utd travelled with a delegation to Italy to discuss Ederson and other potential incomings and exits. The discussions with Ederson are advanced, but no final green light has been given.
Atalanta’s Structural Changes
The second reason for the delay is that Atalanta are undergoing major changes to their structure. Maurizio Sarri is set to become the new manager, and a new sporting director will be appointed. Atalanta will not sign off on any deals, especially those involving key players like Ederson, until these appointments are official.
Man Utd’s Midfield Requirements
Man Utd are aiming to add two or potentially three new midfielders. This follows Casemiro’s departure via free agency and Manuel Ugarte being up for sale. The club wants these additions to be ready to make an instant impact, with the team returning to the Champions League.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is a target of INEOS, while Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is also admired. Michael Carrick is reportedly keen to coach Sandro Tonali.
Man Utd have verbally offered €45m for Ederson, which is close to Atalanta’s valuation range of €45m-€50m. Ederson has prioritised a move to Man Utd.
Generally speaking, clubs will decide they want to sign a player and then make their move.
