French Open Day One: Taylor Fritz Suffers Shock First Round Exit

Nishesh Basavareddy enjoyed a memorable French Open debut, stunning Taylor Fritz in a first-round upset. The 148th-ranked American defeated his ninth-ranked, seventh-seeded countryman in four sets. The match concluded 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), 6-1.

Basavareddy’s Breakthrough Victory

Basavareddy, aged 21 and a former Stanford player, advances to the second round after this significant victory. This marks his first match in the French Open main draw. For Fritz, this loss marks a second consecutive first-round exit at Roland Garros.

Last year, he fell to Daniel Altmaier as the No. 4 seed. Basavareddy earned his spot in the field as a wild-card for winning the USTA Roland-Garros Wild Card Challenge earlier in May.

A Gruelling Encounter on Court

The match saw the first three sets decided by tiebreaks. Basavareddy won the first two tiebreaks. In the third set tiebreak, Basavareddy took a 3-0 lead, nearing a sweep.

Fritz rallied to tie the tiebreak at 3-3. He then survived a match point to win, 11-9, forcing a fourth set. However, Fritz struggled to maintain momentum after the first three sets.

Fritz’s Struggles and Basavareddy’s Domination

Fritz had only played one match in the previous two months, a defeat to Alexei Popyrin. He’d been sidelined with knee tendinitis. The Round of 16 loss at the Geneva Open was his only clay-court warmup before Roland Garros.

Basavareddy broke Fritz twice to establish a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. He then secured the victory when Fritz hit a serve into the net on match point. This win marks Basavareddy’s first top-10 win and the first American victory over a top-10 opponent at the French Open since 2000.

Looking Ahead

Basavareddy said it was an incredible experience, especially after losing the third set. Basavareddy advances to face the winner of the match between Alex Michelsen and Alexander Shevchenko in the second round.
