John Simpson is set to return to the Baltimore Ravens, answering their call to bring back a physical edge to the offensive line. After a spell with the New York Jets, Simpson is eager to rejoin the Ravens and contribute to their pursuit of success.
Simpson’s Return Driven by Desire to ‘Bring That Tenacity Back’
The Ravens made their expectations clear when they contacted John Simpson, who was a free agent. They wanted him to bring back tenacity and physicality to establish a dominant force. Simpson responded positively, committing to do everything he could for the team, viewing Baltimore as ‘home’.
Simpson’s initial stint with the Ravens began near the end of the 2022 season, following his release by the Las Vegas Raiders. At that time, his confidence was shaken, and he felt at a career crossroads. He managed to turn things around during the subsequent offseason, securing the starting left guard position and playing a role in the Ravens’ journey to the AFC Championship game in 2023.
That performance led to a two-year deal with the New York Jets, reportedly worth $18 million. While Simpson continued to perform well with the Jets, he missed the winning environment he experienced in Baltimore. Now back with the Ravens, he is focused on unfinished business, aiming to restore the offensive line’s dominant presence.
Leadership and Learning from Ravens Veterans
The Ravens’ inconsistent play on the interior of the offensive line was seen as a key factor in their offensive struggles. Getting Simpson back was a priority for Baltimore in free agency. Simpson credited his first spell with the Ravens for showing him ‘how it’s supposed to be done’, learning from veterans like Kevin Zeitler, Ronnie Stanley, and Morgan Moses.
While Stanley remains with the team, Simpson now sees himself as a veteran presence. At 28 years old and entering his seventh season, he has also matured off the field. While he feels he hasn’t changed much as a person, Simpson believes he has become more physically imposing as a player.
“I didn’t talk much [before], but now I talk a lot of trash,” Simpson said. “I get into it. I get rowdy sometimes out there.”
Excitement Over New Teammates and Coaching
Simpson was drawn to the familiar environment of the Ravens, calling his return a ‘no-brainer’. He’s also enthusiastic about the new additions to the offensive line. Simpson is looking forward to working with first-round pick Vega Ioane, who has been practicing at right guard during rookie minicamp. Simpson has reviewed Ioane’s college performances and observed him in the weight room.
“He’s a dog, and I think he has what it takes to play at this level and compete against some of the best in this league,” Simpson said. “It’s going to be fun to watch.”
The Ravens have also appointed Dwayne Ledford as their new Offensive Line Coach and run game coordinator. Ledford is emphasising ‘speed off the ball’, focusing on a quick first step to gain an advantage against defensive linemen. Simpson praised Ledford’s coaching abilities.
“He’s one of the best teachers I think I’ve ever had,” Simpson said. “Like, beyond being a coach, he’s a great teacher, and he wants it to be to a point where it’s just like you get a play call and you get up there, you get to the line fast, and you just run it. He d
