UFC 328 delivered a night of high drama, with title bouts living up to the hype in Newark. Sean Strickland shocked Khamzat Chimaev to reclaim the middleweight title. Joshua Van also defended his flyweight title against Tatsuro Taira.
Strickland’s Middleweight Title Win
Sean Strickland defeated Khamzat Chimaev to regain the middleweight title. Strickland had previously held the championship after upsetting Israel Adesanya in 2023 before losing to Dricus du Plessis in 2024. Now, Strickland is a two-time champion after beating Chimaev as upwards of a +400 underdog. He survived on the ground and keeping Chimaev at bay with his crafty jab.
Chimaev told Dana White afterwards that this would be his final fight at 185 pounds. He plans to move to light heavyweight.
Van Retains Flyweight Title
Joshua Van retained the flyweight title with an impressive showing against Tatsuro Taira. Van was forced to recover after Taira gained an early advantage with takedowns and control. However, Van started to connect with strong boxing combinations once he was able to scramble to his feet.
Taira responded with takedowns and some good counter-striking. A brief knockdown in Round 5 was enough for the referee to call it off as Taira was crushed by the decision. The win solidifies Van’s position as champion.
