Barcelona defender Xavi Espart has sent a heartfelt message to Hansi Flick after making his debut for the first team. The debut came in midweek against Newcastle in the Champions League.
Espart Grateful for Flick’s Trust
Flick has likened Espart to Germany legend Philipp Lahm and sent him on at St James’ Park for his first taste of senior football. Espart says having the coach’s trust means absolutely everything to him.
“I really wanted this, but it doesn’t end here. I have to keep working and hopefully more chances will come,” he told the club’s media.
“For a young player like me, the coach trusting me means everything. I’m really grateful to him. The fact that he trusts me helps me stay calm and not feel so much pressure. He doesn’t ask anything special from me, just to play the way I know how to play, not to put pressure on myself.
Looking Ahead to Sevilla
“Ultimately if I’m calm and play my game, everything will go well. Hopefully more chances will come, but now it’s about taking it calm, carrying on training and working, and being ready if more chances come so I can take advantage of them.”
There are likely to be more chances in the coming weeks, as Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde are both out injured. This means we could well see Espart again on Sunday against Sevilla.
