Timo Werner is maintaining his impressive form for San Jose.
The German international scored twice in the 3-2 victory at St. Louis CITY SC, also providing an assist.
Werner’s performance helped the Quakes continue their strong start to the season.
Werner’s Impact
Werner stepped up in the second half, after San Jose fell behind 2-1. He converted a penalty to level the scores. In the 83rd minute, he scored a volley to secure the win.
Werner has now recorded at least one goal and one assist in three consecutive matches. He is the first Earthquakes player to achieve this.
In just over 450 minutes, Werner has contributed 4 goals and 5 assists.
Record-Breaking Start
San Jose are achieving record-breaking results. With the victory, San Jose has nine wins in their opening 10 games. They are the first MLS team since 2000 to achieve that.
The Quakes have also won their first five road games of the season. They equalled the record set by Red Bull New York (2022) and LA Galaxy (1998).
“I give our team high marks for the character they have, and the desire to win and get a result,” said Arena. “A lot of credit to our players to get back in the game.”
Supporters’ Shield Standings
The Quakes are at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings. They have 27 points, three ahead of Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
“It’s difficult to play in MLS,” Werner said. “You can see it in several games: everyone can beat each other.”
San Jose know there are still challenges ahead. “We won today, and if we keep going like that, it can be and it will be a good season for us.”
The Quakes are back home on Tuesday for the @opencup round of 16.
