Virginia Tech Defeats Liberty in Midweek Baseball Clash

Virginia Tech secured a marquee midweek victory against Liberty, dampening the Flames with an 8-4 win at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

The Hokies carried a no-hitter through six and two-thirds innings.

Key Offensive Performances for Virginia Tech

Senior catcher Henry Cooke led Virginia Tech (26-21), going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs. This victory effectively clinched the Hokies’ fifth Quadrant I victory of the 2026 season. Cooke batted in each of the Hokies’ first three runs, including a two-run home run to left field during the top of the third inning. He reached base four times and caught one runner stealing.

Seven distinct Virginia Tech players combined for 11 hits. The Hokies improved to 17-0 this season when outhitting their opponent.

Pete Daniel homered from the ninth spot in the batting order, powering a solo home run that led off the visitors’ two-run fifth inning. Freshman second baseman Ethan Ball accounted for two hits and two RBIs, while Sam Gates went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Pitching Shines Early

Southpaw starter Madden Clement logged two and one-third scoreless innings for Virginia Tech. Right-handed reliever Ethan Grim earned the winning decision by adding another two and two-thirds scoreless innings. Logan Eisenreich blanked Liberty (35-14) during the sixth inning before the Hokies tacked on two more runs during the seventh inning to lead, 7-0.

Liberty’s Late Rally Falls Short

Easton Swofford broke up Virginia Tech’s no-hit bit during the bottom of the seventh inning. This prompted a string of five consecutive singles by the Flames that resulted in four runs.

Preston Crowl closed the door with the Hokies leading, 7-4, ultimately collecting the final seven outs to seal the result.

Virginia Tech will open a two-game weekend series against UNCG on Saturday, May 9, at English Field. First pitch between the Hokies and the Spartans is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
