Solo Ball of UConn is looking for assistance after a string of poor shooting performances. The junior guard has struggled in crucial moments for the Huskies recently.
Recent Shooting Woes
Ball’s recent performances have been frustrating. Outside of a 19-point game with four 3-pointers against Xavier in the Big East Tournament quarterfinal, he has had some poor performances. He went 2-for-10 from the field with the regular-season championship at stake against Marquette. In the Big East semifinal and championship games, he combined to shoot 4-for-14 for a total of 10 points.
Ball began the NCAA Tournament with nine points on 3-for-12 shooting against Furman. He then went 0-for-5 in only 13 minutes in the Round of 32 against UCLA.
- It was his first scoreless game since his freshman season.
Seeking Support and Positivity
Ball stated that he has learned to ask for help. He said that if his head isn’t in the best space, or if he is second-guessing himself, he needs to ask for help. He added that he used to handle things on his own and hope it worked, but that isn’t how things work. He believes it is important to lean on family, friends, and the coaching staff.
Ball said that he has felt more positivity since doing so. He is also staying off social media.
Coach Hurley’s Confidence
Jayden Ross has stepped up off the bench amidst Ball’s struggles. He has helped keep the Huskies’ season alive with his defensive intensity and shotmaking.
Coach Dan Hurley is keen on keeping his starting lineup consistent. He doesn’t want to kill anyone’s confidence and has not wavered with Ball. Hurley noted that Ball’s 3-point numbers have dipped from 41.4% last season to below 30% this year.
Hurley said that Solo was a preseason All-American and a second team All-Big East player. He believes they wouldn’t be in the position they are in without Ball’s big games throughout the year. Hurley said that Ball just needs to see the ball go in and focus on defending and rebounding, which will take his mind off his shooting. He believes that something positive is coming for Ball.
Utilising Support Systems
Ball says he is doing everything he can to hold up his end. He goes to his parents and his coach. He also has a mental skills coach.
He is leaning on them as much as he can.
UConn will meet Michigan State in the Sweet 16 on Friday night.
