The first round of the 2026 men’s NCAA tournament has concluded after thirty-two games.
Here’s a look at the action from Day 2, including expert analysis of each game and a look at the winners’ chances of advancing.
Reed’s Dominance Propels UConn
Tarris Reed Jr. proved too much for Furman. The 6-foot-11 centre dominated, hauling in 27 rebounds and scoring 31 points. Reed outrebounded Furman on his own. While UConn struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 5 of 25 from 3-point range, Reed controlled the interior. He secured 11 offensive rebounds, including crucial ones in the closing moments, to seal the victory.
Reed’s performance places him among an elite group. He is just the third player in the past 50 years to record 30 points and 20 rebounds in an NCAA tournament game. UConn’s second-round opponent will be UCLA.
Miami’s Resilience Secures Victory
Miami pulled off a gutty win. After Missouri took the lead, Miami responded with an 11-0 run to regain control. Senior forward Malik Reneau, after a slow start, found his rhythm with a couple of 3-pointers. He scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half. Despite feeling like a road game, Miami handled the environment and secured their first NCAA tournament win since 2023. Miami will face Purdue in the second round.
UConn’s Path to the Sweet 16
UConn has a favourable outlook in most of its upcoming matchups. Even if Silas Demary Jr. is unavailable, Solo Ball can create shots off the dribble. Alex Karaban poses a threat on the perimeter as a 38.6% 3-point shooter. Tarris Reed Jr. is coming off a 31-point, 27-rebound performance. Braylon Mullins is considered a first-round NBA prospect.
The Huskies have faced efficiency and turnover challenges recently. However, if they can find a better rhythm, they have the potential to defeat any team. Tyler Bilodeau’s potential return would test their bigs, including Reed, defensively. UConn, with victories over Florida, BYU, and St. John’s, has overcome teams with more star power than UCLA. UConn can keep their approach simple and secure a win.
Can Miami Continue Their Run?
Jai Lucas has already overseen a significant turnaround this season. A win against Purdue and a Sweet 16 appearance would mark another achievement in his first season. However, it won’t be an easy task. Malik Reneau will need to be the best player on the court to give Miami a chance to win. The Hurricanes also need to pressure Braden Smith and maintain discipline in the paint.
Even with those adjustments, Reneau, Tre Donaldson and Shelton Henderson will need to perform at their peak.
The journey to the Sweet Sixteen promises further excitement as the tournament progresses.
