Troy Aikman has confirmed he will continue to work with the Miami Dolphins. This follows his consultancy role in the club’s search for a new general manager this offseason. Aikman, also known for his role as a “Monday Night Football” analyst, said he will remain involved with the team in “some capacity”.
Aikman’s Unexpected Dolphins Involvement
Aikman admitted he was surprised by the initial approach from the Dolphins. He said being hired as a consultant “kind of caught me out of left field — wasn’t expecting that”. Despite the surprise, he decided to take on the role. He said he “dove into it and decided I would do it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt like I was of some help. Where that might go, I’m not sure, but I’m going to continue to work with them.”
The Dolphins sought an external perspective with NFL connections to assist with the GM hire. This led them to Aikman. The organisation subsequently hired Jon-Eric Sullivan, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, as their new GM in January. Aikman was reportedly a strong supporter of Sullivan’s appointment.
Front Office Appeal
Aikman, who had no prior experience in NFL ownership or executive roles, said the experience satisfied an interest in working in an NFL front office. While he never seriously considered coaching after retiring from the Dallas Cowboys in 2000, he had always considered a front-office position a possibility. However, he prioritised spending time with his two daughters when they were young.
He said that “pursuing that would be selfish”.
Broadcasting Career Continues
Aikman has focused on his broadcasting career. In 2026, he will mark his 25th year calling games with Joe Buck. The Buck-Aikman partnership is the longest in NFL broadcasting history. Next year, they will call their seventh Super Bowl together.
Aikman is pleased with his current situation. He said he is “very blessed; I continue to enjoy what I’m doing: broadcasting. Love who I work with. I’ve been working with Joe (Buck) — shoot, we’re going on our 25th year together next year. That just doesn’t happen in this business…”.
“It’s been awesome. I don’t know how much longer that will go — hopefully, a long time — but yeah, life’s good right now.”
