Detroit Tigers’ Carpenter to IL; Workman Called Up

The Detroit Tigers have been dealt another blow with outfielder Kerry Carpenter heading to the 10-day injured list. Carpenter suffered a left shoulder sprain after crashing into the right-field sidewall during a game against the Royals. The incident occurred as Carpenter attempted to chase down Bobby Witt Jr.’s inside-the-park home run.

Carpenter’s absence further compounds the Tigers’ injury list, which already includes several key players. He is the 15th player on the Tigers’ injured list.

Carpenter’s Injury Details

The injury occurred when Carpenter collided with the sidewall while pursuing Witt’s opposite-field ball down the right-field line. He left the game a couple of innings later, having sprained the AC joint in his shoulder.

Manager A.J. Hinch stated that initial tests showed no structural damage, but Carpenter is experiencing inflammation. In 2023, Carpenter missed about a month and a half with a sprained right shoulder suffered on a home run robbery. This time, it’s his other shoulder.

Impact on the Tigers’ Lineup

Carpenter has a batting average of .216 with six home runs and 17 RBIs. He has been an important offensive player in the middle of the Tigers lineup for much of the past two seasons. Losing Carpenter is described as a major blow for the offence, due to his ability to perform against right-handed pitching.

Hinch acknowledged Carpenter’s importance, noting that opposing managers often plan around him when using their bullpen. Hinch said the team will need multiple players to step up in Carpenter’s absence. “Carp’s injury could be quick,” Hinch said.

Workman’s Opportunity

Replacing Carpenter on the 26-man roster will be Gage Workman. He gets his first opportunity with Detroit after spending parts of last season.

Team’s Reaction to Mounting Injuries

Catcher Jake Rogers expressed the team’s frustration with the growing list of injuries. “I don’t even know how many guys we have on the IL, but it seems like there’s a new one every day,” Rogers said.

Rogers added that the team needs to find a spark to overcome their current challenges. The Tigers’ injured list includes Parker Meadows, Javier Báez, and Gleyber Torres, among others. The team is feeling the impact of a five-game losing streak.

Hinch stated that Carpenter’s return timeline depends on the inflammation and how quickly he can swing freely. In the meantime, the team will need to find collective ways to compensate for his absence.
