St Mirren and Dundee United: End-of-Season Premiership Clash

St Mirren and Dundee United faced off as the Scottish Premiership season draws to a close.

Dundee United’s Season Finale

Jim Goodwin’s Dundee United will finish seventh in this season’s Scottish Premiership. This places them top of the bottom six. Some might call them ‘best of the rest’.

Dundee United haven’t won since their Dundee derby win late last month. Two defeats and a draw have dampened their post-split programme. Their match against St Mirren was an opportunity to finish the season on a high.

Dundee United bid Tannadice fans a season’s farewell on Tuesday. Their game against St Mirren was their final away game.

St Mirren’s Play-off Preparation

St Mirren’s place in the Scottish Premiership play-off final was confirmed on Tuesday. This came despite their winning away to Aberdeen.

Kilmarnock’s victory over Dundee ensured St Mirren could finish no higher than 11th.

St Mirren played their last game against Dundee United before the two-legged play-off final against Partick Thistle. Partick Thistle sealed their place in the final by beating Dunfermline Athletic on aggregate on Friday evening.

Kilmarnock manager Neil McCann said this was a really important game for the club. He stated they could go and get ninth, but no-one is going to hand it to them. He added that they have to go and earn it and know it’ll be a tough game.

McCann said the players are on their holidays after the match. He said the first XI is very much the same and the players on the bench are there on merit. He could have easily brought in some of the young boys but thinks the team is reflective of his mood. He wants to go and win the game.

Neil McCann had a mission to keep Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership when he was appointed in January. He achieved that in midweek.

Dundee and Aberdeen will be relieved to be playing a last day bottom-six dead rubber at Dens Park. Both teams will be happy to have managed to disentangle themselves from being properly embroiled in the battle to avoid the dreaded relegation play-off spot.

If Dundee lose and Kilmarnock beat hosts Livingston, Killie will finish ninth. That would push Steven Pressley’s side down to third bottom. Kilmarnock could even seal ninth with a win and a Dundee draw.

There has been nothing positive about Aberdeen’s campaign. Aberdeen’s travelling support will just want to see the back of it in the hope that head coach Stephen Robinson’s looming close-season rebuild can signal better times ahead.
