Skubal Shines Against MLB-Best Braves, Tigers Claim Victory

Tarik Skubal showcased his pitching prowess against the Atlanta Braves, the team holding the best record in the Majors. He pitched seven innings, conceding five hits and striking out seven, contributing to the Detroit Tigers’ victory.

Skubal’s Strategy and Early Braves Lead

Skubal explained his approach, noting the importance of pitching deep into games and inducing ground balls. “I would love to go out there and strike every single guy out, but I think I’d probably find myself being done pitching after about three or four innings, just with pitch counts and stuff,” Skubal said. “That’s part of being a starter, you have to pitch deeper in the games, and now you need to get swing and miss when you need to, in certain situations. But for the most part, a nice routine ground ball for me on a first or second pitch is just as good as a strikeout.”

The Braves initially took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Skubal struck out Ronald Acuña Jr., Drake Baldwin singled. Ozzie Albies then hit a 400-foot home run to left field.

Tigers Respond and Take the Lead

Detroit responded in the second inning. Wenceel Pérez doubled, and Jace Jung walked to put runners on base. Kevin McGonigle singled, scoring Pérez, and Jung later scored on a throwing error by JR Ritchie, tying the game at 2-2.

In the third inning, Riley Greene hit a 417-foot home run to straightaway center field, putting the Tigers ahead. Greene got out in front of an 87.9 mph changeup.

Skubal Settles In, Concerns Briefly Arise

Following Greene’s home run, Skubal found his rhythm. He struck out Acuña in all three of his plate appearances. Skubal also worked efficiently through the heart of Atlanta’s order.

A brief moment of concern arose in the seventh inning when Skubal appeared to show some discomfort. After a mound visit and warmup pitches, he remained in the game to finish the inning, striking out all three batters.

Skubal relied on his four-seam fastball and mixed in a changeup, sinker, and slider. The defence contributed by turning two double plays. Skubal threw 91 pitches during his seven innings.
