Alan Shearer believes two factors could lead to Sandro Tonali’s departure from Newcastle United and a move to Manchester United. He also revealed the potential transfer fee required to secure the Italian midfielder.
Two Factors That Could Trigger Tonali’s Transfer
Shearer suggests that Man Utd will have a strong chance at signing Tonali if the player makes it clear he wants to leave Newcastle. The other factor is if INEOS miss out on signing Elliot Anderson.
“Tonali, on the going to Man Utd rumours, I guess it all depends on if Man Utd get Elliot Anderson,” Shearer told Chronicle Live.
Shearer added, “Very much like the [Anthony] Gordon situation, if he makes it clear that he wants to leave, then you have to say, okay, we accept that, we get the best possible price for you and move on.”
Newcastle’s Stance and Potential Price Tag
Despite suggesting Tonali could force a move by expressing his desire to leave, Shearer insists Newcastle will demand a significant fee. He warned Manchester United they will need to pay a high price for Tonali’s signature.
“He is on a long-term contract, and we did look after him and protect him when he got done with all those charges, but it might be best for both parties. If they’re getting a huge figure like £90m, then it might be best. If Newcastle are selling Gordon for £70m and Anderson’s going for over £100m, then it would take an awful amount of money to get him out of Newcastle.”
Man Utd’s Midfield Requirements
Manchester United are reportedly looking to reinforce their midfield this summer. They are expected to sign at least two, and potentially three, new midfielders. This is to compensate for Casemiro’s departure and to manage the demands of Champions League football next season.
While Atalanta’s Ederson is reportedly set to become the first signing, United are also targeting a player with Premier League experience. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is reportedly their top choice.
Amid concerns that Anderson might join Manchester City, United are considering alternative options, with Tonali being a prominent target.
Shearer’s View on Tonali’s Future at Newcastle
Shearer expressed his desire to see Tonali remain at Newcastle. “I would like to see him stay at Newcastle, because I think there’s a real talent there, and I think he links really well with Bruno, but I don’t know his or the club’s situation.”
He acknowledged that selling Tonali might benefit Newcastle, depending on their recruitment plans. “It might work for the club selling him. It might, depending on what their recruitment is, if they’ve got someone to come in who they believe in 12 or 18 months will be better, and they can go again.”
According to Shearer, Elliot Anderson would be both Man City and Man United’s number one target. The prospect of Tonali leaving St James’ Park was first aired by his agent on the final days of the Jan
