Scottish Premiership: Hearts’ Lead Cut After Kilmarnock Loss

Hearts’ lead in the Scottish Premiership is now down to two points following their defeat in Ayrshire. Celtic secured a 3-1 victory against Motherwell, recovering from an initial setback. The action continues with St Mirren hosting Rangers and Dundee facing a derby at Dens Park.

McInnes Disappointed with Hearts’ Performance

Hearts head coach Derek McInnes expressed his disappointment, stating, “It wasn’t good enough.” He felt the team didn’t start the game well. McInnes added, “I didn’t think we looked sharp enough to the pitch off the ball, didn’t close spaces down or stop crosses. I just thought we looked easy to play against.”

McInnes criticised the team’s inability to put pressure on the cross, leading to Kilmarnock’s goal. He conceded that Kilmarnock fought hard for their victory. Despite having 60% possession and more chances, Hearts’ attacking efforts ultimately “petered out”. McInnes stated that he told the players that they still wake up top of the league with eight games to go.

McCann Hails Kilmarnock’s Bravery

Kilmarnock manager Neil McCann was full of praise for his players. He said, “There’s a lot to like. I’m so proud of the players. We’ve had two weeks to dwell on the Falkirk result.” McCann emphasised the importance of playing with risk and bravery while matching Hearts’ physicality.

McCann acknowledged Hearts’ strategy of throwing balls into the box but felt his team handled it well. He added, “We did all the stuff off the ball so well. Derek [McInnes] is a first-class manager and we had to adjust our tactics to respect how Hearts would play.” McCann was pleased with his team’s composure and fighting spirit, believing they deserved their victory and could have scored more.

The Race for the Top Spot Heats Up

  • Hearts’ lead is now only two points.
  • Rangers could close the gap further with a win against St Mirren.
  • There are still “a lot of twists and turns” to come.

Former Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cammy Bell believes Hearts are not going to go away and that it’s going to be a brilliant end to the season. Allan Preston, a former Hearts midfielder, echoed this sentiment, stating that there’s still a lot of football to be played.

The Scottish Premiership continues with St Mirren versus Rangers and a Dundee derby at Dens Park. If Rangers secure a win, they will be just three points behind Hearts.
