Mexican football is focused on the upcoming semi-final, with Santiago Sandoval emerging as a key name for Chivas.
The 18-year-old’s talent has captured attention, as has his family connection to Alonso “Negrito” Sandoval.
A Chip Off the Old Block
Santiago Sandoval was born in Boca del Río, Veracruz, on 7 August 2007. He has become known as the “Joya del Rebaño”. Sandoval’s time in the Chivas youth system began in the Under-14s. He debuted in the first division on 27 July 2025 against León.
Under manager Gabriel Milito, Sandoval plays mainly as an attacking midfielder. He has become a key part of the attack due to the absence of players such as Armando “Hormiga” González.
His breakthrough came on 9 May, when he scored twice against Tigres, securing Chivas’ place in the semi-finals.
Milito has shown faith in Sandoval, preferring him to other prospects to lead the attack at the Estadio Azteca.
Semi-Final Showdown Looms
Chivas will face Cruz Azul in the first leg of the semi-final at the Estadio Azteca. The match has added importance and historical context.
Chivas enter the match having eliminated Tigres. Cruz Azul are in a period of change with Joel Huiqui in charge. For Chivas, it is an opportunity to show that their youth system can compensate for the absence of national team players, despite missing five players.
Team morale is high after their quarter-final victory. Cruz Azul have the advantage of playing the first leg at home and have Christian Ebere in good form.
Family History and Influences
Santiago Sandoval’s story is linked to that of his father, Luis Alonso “Negro” Sandoval, who also played for Chivas, as well as América and Monterrey.
Unlike other footballers’ children, Santiago’s career has been marked by his father’s absence.
Alonso Sandoval has acknowledged the family dynamic. “The credit belongs to his mother, who guided him well. The talent and qualities are inherited from the father. As a father, it makes you happy to see him succeeding, and I hope he continues. However, all the benefits and everything he has achieved is thanks to his mother,” he said.
