Sacramento Kings Eye Ja Morant Trade: A Bold Move on the Cards?

The Sacramento Kings are once again evaluating their point guard options this offseason. After last year’s challenges, they find themselves in a familiar position, exploring both the draft and the trade market.

The Kings hold the seventh pick in the upcoming draft, but they are also considering a significant move to acquire a former All-Star via trade. Could Ja Morant be the answer?

Talks Between Kings and Grizzlies

James Ham, host of the Locked On Kings and Kings Beat podcasts, indicated that discussions between the Kings and Memphis Grizzlies regarding Morant are more than just rumours. According to Ham, a deal was seriously discussed at the trade deadline.

However, the possibility of Giannis Antetokounmpo becoming available could complicate matters, potentially involving Morant in a larger, multi-team trade. Whether a deal will actually happen is uncertain.

The Question Marks Around Morant

Morant presents both potential and risk. He faces questions related to off-the-court issues, injury history, and shooting ability.

There are concerns his game, heavily reliant on athleticism, may not age well. Despite these concerns, Morant is only 26 and was once seen as a potential face of the NBA.

Potential Trade Details

Financially, a trade of Morant for Zach LaVine would work, with Morant having two years left on his contract at $42 million and $45 million, respectively, and LaVine holding a player option for $49 million this year.

The main hurdle involves draft pick compensation. The Kings reportedly wanted a first-round pick to take on Morant at the trade deadline, but Memphis also wanted a pick from the Kings. The Kings were unwilling to include a pick.

The Sticking Point: Draft Compensation

The Kings’ demand for a first-round pick reflects a cautious approach. With Morant’s contract, the Kings are being careful not to take on a large contract without sufficient return.

With one year less on each contract, an agreement might be possible. If the teams can resolve the issue of draft picks, Morant could be on his way to Sacramento this offseason.

The outline of a deal is there.
