Sabres’ Trade Talks for Robert Thomas Stall with Blues

The Buffalo Sabres’ pursuit of St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas has hit a snag. It appears that negotiations between the two teams have stalled as the NHL trade deadline approaches.

St. Louis’ High Asking Price

Talks between St. Louis and Buffalo have seemingly ended. It appears the Sabres were unwilling to meet the asking price for Thomas. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported that the Blues were firm on what they wanted in return for the centre.

The Blues were reportedly seeking a package including prospects, a player, and a first-round pick. Chris Johnston reported the Sabres were dangling the equivalent of four first-round picks in talks with the Blues. The Blues have reportedly been looking for three to four ‘premium assets’ in this deal.

Dreger explained that the Sabres were willing to go the distance in negotiations, but ultimately couldn’t agree to parting with four significant pieces, including a roster player.

Robert Thomas’ Value to the Blues

Robert Thomas has a cap hit of $8.125 million and is signed through the 2030-31 season. Thomas also has a full no-trade clause. He has 12 goals and 35 points in 43 games this season.

  • Thomas was selected 20th overall in the 2017 draft.
  • He helped the Blues win the Stanley Cup in 2019, recording a goal and six points in 21 playoff games.

The Blues are not necessarily looking to trade Thomas. He is a young player on a long-term contract. St. Louis is not in a hurry to get rid of him and is looking for a big return.

Sabres’ Push to End Playoff Drought

Buffalo are currently second in the Atlantic Division. They are looking to end their 14-year playoff drought. The Sabres picked up another two points with a win over the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Sabres appear to be getting aggressive as they push for a playoff spot.

While the door isn’t entirely closed, the Sabres were not willing to part with what St. Louis were asking for.
