Ryan Fox Matches Major Championship Record with 62 at British Open

Ryan Fox has matched the major championship scoring record with a round of 62 at the British Open. The New Zealander achieved the feat on Saturday at Royal Birkdale, becoming the third player this week to record a score of 62.

Fox’s Record-Equalling Performance

Fox started early in Southport, England, taking advantage of barely a trace of wind. He went out with five birdies on the front nine on the par-70 Birkdale links. He also birdied two of his last three holes to complete his round of 62.

Shared Major Championship Record

Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns each had 62 some 20 minutes apart on Friday. There have now been eight rounds of 62 in major championship history. Half of these record-tying rounds have occurred at Royal Birkdale. Branden Grace was the first to set the record with a 62 at Royal Birkdale in 2017.

The Close Call for a 61

On the 18th hole, Fox found himself in a pot bunker off the fairway. Despite this, he still managed to find the green. This left him with a birdie putt of nearly 50 feet, which would have secured a score of 61. He left the putt short by about 5 feet, subsequently holing the par putt.

Fox’s performance adds his name to the growing list of players who share the major championship scoring record. His round occurred at Royal Birkdale, which has now hosted half of all 62s in major championship history.
