Roman Anthony’s World Baseball Classic has been nothing short of impressive, highlighted by a go-ahead solo home run. This helped Team USA secure a 2-1 victory over Team Dominican Republic in the semi-finals. The performance left his Red Sox teammates in awe of the 21-year-old’s achievements.
Teammates Expected Anthony to Excel
Red Sox veteran shortstop Trevor Story stated he was not surprised by Anthony’s success. Story said he expected Anthony to do something like that, given his age and where he’s at in his career. Story added that Anthony has earned it by the way he goes about his business and the confidence that he carries.
Story noted that Anthony seems to be one of the guys that people gravitate towards. He also described Anthony as a unique person and player.
Anthony’s Impact on Team USA
Anthony’s contributions to Team USA have been significant. Across six games, he has a batting line of .318/.423/.591, including two home runs. He also leads the team with seven RBIs.
His home run propelled Team USA to the final against either Italy or Venezuela. This followed a three-run home run that made the difference in Team USA’s 5-3 win over Mexico.
From Fan to Player
Three years ago, Anthony attended the World Baseball Classic final as a fan. He arranged an outing with his Minor League teammates to watch Team USA against Samurai Japan. They witnessed Shohei Ohtani strike out Mike Trout to win it for Japan.
Now, Anthony has the opportunity to avenge that loss. He is the starting left fielder, added to the roster early in Spring Training when Corbin Carroll had to bow out. Anthony had just been drafted by the Red Sox out of high school eight months prior to attending the previous WBC.
Anthony said that being on the field is a whole lot better.
Anthony is projected to emerge this season as one of baseball’s newest stars. He has done nothing to dim those expectations while playing on a roster that includes Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
