The Portland Fire and New York Liberty, each holding a 3-3 record in the WNBA, are set to clash in Brooklyn. This will be their third meeting in just 14 days, marking the final time they square off this season.
The Fire, an expansion team, previously celebrated their inaugural franchise victory by defeating the Liberty on May 12.
Fire’s Recent Form and Offensive Focus
Portland heads into the game following a 99-80 victory over the Toronto Tempo. They also recorded tight wins against the Liberty (98-96) and the Connecticut Sun (83-82). However, their three losses have each been by a margin of at least 15 points.
The Fire are only the fourth WNBA expansion franchise to start .500 or better during the first six games of the season, joining the Minnesota Lynx (4-2 in 1999), Orlando Miracle (3-3 in ’99) and Toronto Tempo (3-3 this year).
Offensive struggles have been apparent in Portland’s defeats. They are averaging at least 10 more points per game in their victories. In a 90-73 loss to the Indiana Fever, the Fire only managed to convert 3 of 16 3-pointers and tied a season low with three offensive rebounds.
“I was more concerned that we’re not getting more offensively, especially with all the crashing that we’re trying to emphasize as a group,” Fire head coach Alex Sarama said of the team’s offensive rebounding. “We’ve really got to come up with more because the last two games, it’s been improving the crash rate and what we’re getting. And tonight we only came up with three.”
Liberty Look to Bounce Back at Home
The Liberty are coming off a 91-76 defeat against the Dallas Wings at home on Sunday. New York are currently in the midst of a seven-game homestand, the longest of their season.
Despite entering the season as preseason favourites to win the championship, the Liberty have had a .500 record thus far.
Guard Sabrina Ionescu made her season debut in the loss to Dallas after missing the first five games with an injured left foot. She led the team with seven assists and scored 11 points on 4-for-15 shooting from the field.
The team also saw a 20-point performance from Satou Sabally, who joined the Liberty as an offseason free agent and missed the first four games.
