The Pirates are aiming to recover from a disappointing loss in Milwaukee, where they struggled with only two hits and 18 strikeouts.
Adding a light-hearted touch to the clubhouse, an inflatable bounce house was introduced as the latest prank. Konnor Griffin jokingly suggested the idea with Jake Mangum to celebrate his 20th birthday, and they followed through.
“Makes for a fun clubhouse,” Griffin said, shaking his head.
Bryan Reynolds added, “First time I’ve seen that.”
Pirates manager Don Kelly said, “I love it. It’s good camaraderie, and I know Konnor’s a great sport about it.”
Opportunity Knocks for Pirates’ Bats
The Pirates face the Cardinals in a four-game series. The focus will be on the Pirates’ batting performance.
Dustin May will be the starting pitcher for the Cardinals. He has a 3-2 record with a 5.84 ERA this season, and opponents are batting .337 against him.
St. Louis has lost their last four games. Their team ERA is 4.87, ranking 27th in MLB.
The Pirates, holding a 16-12 record, have not suffered back-to-back losses since March 26 and March 28.
“When it doesn’t click one night, we’ve been able to put it behind us and show up the next day prepared, work the same and compete at a high level,” Kelly said.
Dotel’s Chance in Middle Relief
Wilber Dotel is set for a significant opportunity with the Pirates. Mason Montgomery will start as an opener, with Dotel expected to pitch for an extended period.
Dotel’s fastball averages 97.1. Last season in Double-A, Dotel led all Pirates Minor Leaguers with 131 strikeouts.
“Seeing and hearing from the development staff, the guy is our hardest worker in the Minor League system,” Kelly said. “He continues to get better, continues to work on things. We think there’s a really high ceiling.”
Dotel has pitched twice for the Pirates this season, allowing an earned run in 2 2/3 innings. The Pirates need middle-relief help, and Dotel can provide strong work in a bulk role.
Ozuna’s History Against May
Marcell Ozuna is one to watch on the Pirates side. He is five for eight in his career against May, with a double and a home run.
As a team, the Pirates are hitting .455 against May. He is tied for most hits allowed in MLB with 33.
Triolo’s Rehab Assignment
Jared Triolo was with the Pirates for a day. His rehab assignment will be transferred to Double-A Altoona.
He’s recovering from a right knee patellar tendon injury that occurred during the home opener. He appeared in two games with Low-A Bradenton, going hitless in five at-bats with a walk and a stolen base.
The Pirates are looking to capitalize on the opportunity against the Cardinals and continue their resilient form.
