PGA of America Discusses Championship Dates and International Expansion

PGA of America representatives addressed the media to discuss the PGA Championship. PGA CEO Terry Clark and Chief Championships Officer Kerry Haigh took to the microphone for the press conference.

No Immediate Plans to Change Championship Date

The PGA of America appears content with the PGA Championship’s current May scheduling. Terry Clark stated that while he is always looking for ways to improve, he is not actively seeking to move the championship to a later date or back to August.

Clark cited scheduling considerations around the Olympics as an additional reason to maintain the current date. He stated that he appreciates not having to consider changes during Olympic years.

Kerry Haigh acknowledged the agronomic challenges presented by a May date, particularly the limited time for grasses to grow in the Northeast. He also noted benefits such as milder temperatures and fewer storms, which enhance the fan experience and reduce the likelihood of play delays.

Focus Remains on US-Based Venues

When asked about the possibility of taking the PGA Championship outside the United States, Terry Clark indicated that it is not a current priority. Clark stated that he believes the championship has a strong identity tied to venues within the United States. He feels there are ample opportunities to strengthen that identity within the country.

While downplaying any immediate changes, Clark did leave the door open for future re-evaluation of the tournament’s structure. He stated that he never says never, as the organisation is always trying to improve.

Areas for Improvement in the Ryder Cup

Terry Clark opined that the PGA of America has the ability to improve its assets. He added that there are some areas of the Ryder Cup that clearly need improvement. Clark expressed confidence in the PGA of America’s ability to address these issues.

Clark feels very good about the organisation’s position to strengthen its assets.
